Large bowel cancer / colorectal carcinoma

The large bowel consists of the colon and the rectum. For the colon, there currently doesn’t exist any local therapy concepts apart from surgery. If the tumor has already locally advanced, which makes an operation difficult, it is recommended to carry out a preliminary radio-chemotherapy which can be combined with regional hyperthermia to increase its effectiveness (RHT-rectum carcinoma).

The colorectal carcinoma with distant metastases (often liver metastases) is treated with chemotherapy in different schemata. In this context, there are treatment concepts which additionally use whole-body hyperthermia to increase the effect of the treatment (WBHT-colorectal).

It is very difficult to treat the relapse of a rectum carcinoma, i.e. the new growth of a tumor, especially if it occurs after a radiotherapy. There exist treatment concepts with radiotherapy and chemotherapy combined with regional hyperthermia (RHT-recurrence of rectal carcinoma).
