Breast cancer respectively mammary cancer

For a localised mammary cancer (i.e. a cancer that is growing locally and in a limited way, without metastases), there exists a successful standard therapy (operation with post- treatment consisting of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy), where hyperthermia is not applied.

In case that there occurs a new growth after a preceding therapy (local relapse), hyperthermia can be used in addition to radio- and/or chemotherapy. This is carried out at centers with a local hyperthermia (LHT-relapse of mammary cancer). It must be guaranteed however, that the tumor can be heated sufficiently. An earlier European study proved that radiotherapy together with hyperthermia had a better effect than radiotherapy on its own.

Even for the metastasizing mammary carcinoma, i.e. breast cancer with metastases, there exist a range of highly efficient systemic therapies which are used first of all as standard therapies. Only if their effect is not satisfying or in case of a relapse of the disease, an additional whole-body hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy will be discussed or offered as a possible option of therapy (WBHT- mammary carcinoma).
